Last week was the grand opening of Calvin Klein’s newest freestanding store in the Fairview Mall. The new store which spans over 6100 square feet is offering a full range of men and women’s apparel, jeans wear, underwear, accessories, eye-wear and fragrances. The mall was invaded by thousands of hysterical teens because Joe Jonas was going to be at the opening. Joe Jonas who was dressed in black leather motto jacket, white V-neck T-shirt and black Calvin Klein jeans hit the stage to perform songs from his new solo album, Fast-life. Calvin Klein’s Global Creative Director, Kevin Carrigan and president and CEO Tom Murry were also there to celebrate the grand opening. So if you happen to be at the Fairview Mall check out the new Calvin Klein store in the eastern corner or the mall. Also watch out for the opening of 40 more stores in the next 5 years.
“My father had a very simple view of life: you don’t get anything for nothing. Everything has to be earned, through work, persistence and honesty. My father also had a deep charm, the gift of winning our trust. He was the kind of man with whom many people dream of spending an evening.”
– Grace Kelly
Grace Kelly was born November 12, 1929 and became one of Americas leading actresses turned princess. She won an Academy Award for her outstanding performance in ‘The Country Girl”. Grace Kelly went on to marry Rainier III, Prince of Monaco in April 1956 and became Princess of Monaco but was most commonly known as Princess Grace. Sadly she died in September 14, 1982 after she lost control of her car when she suffered a stroke. Her daughter, who was in the car, survived the accident but we lost Princess Grace. I have always been fascinated by Grace Kelly’s life and have read, and watched everything I could about her and one my favourite movies has to be ‘To Catch a Thief”. So when I heard the Grace Kelly Exhibit was coming to the TIFF Bell Lightbox I was tickled pink with happiness. I had to work the night of the launch and sadly missed meeting Prince Albert. I have since seen the exhibit and truly enjoyed every minute of it. So make sure to get down there to see this glorious exhibit which will be there until January 4th.
“I am basically a feminist. I think that women can do anything they decide to do.”
– Grace Kelly
“The thing that made her stand out is what we call style.”
- McCall’s magazine, 1955
“I have always been close to flowers… to have complete satisfaction from flowers you must have time to spend with them. Bonds must be forged between you and them. I talk to them and they talk to me.”
– Grace Kelly

Two weeks ago I got the chance to work on this wonderful event and run the Giles Deacon show and other backstage duties. The British designer was in town showing his collection for the event Lunch with Margaret and George. George and Lisa Corbo the owners of George C one of Toronto’s hottest designer’s boutiques for stylish men and women in Yorkville has partnered with the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation raise money for the Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre. While I was busy backstage with Mac Cosmetics and Alcorn Salon making sure all the models were runway ready for the show, the guests were treated to a Champagne cocktail followed by a sumptuous lunch at theScarpetta restaurant at the Thompson Toronto Hotel. This sold out event raised $200,000 which was just marvelous.
“In 2009 Princess Margaret Hospital’s breast cancer rapid diagnostic centre received a $12.5 million donation from Emmanuelle Gattuso and Allen Slaight, who have since matched donations dollar for dollar towards the $25 Million expansion campaign. The couple’s fundraising campaign is part of the inspiration behind Lunch with Margaret and George.”
The event was a smashing success and the show went off without a hitch. I was so lucky to have worked this event, meet great people and work for a great cause. The next day I helped do Giles Deacon PR while he did some interviews at his Trunk Show at George C in Yorkville. Giles was such a pleasure to work with and a very warm loving personality with a great talent. One thing is for sure his collection was out of this world and nothing I have seen or ever worked with before. I would like to thank Leesa Butler for giving me the opportunity to work this fantastic event. Also George and Lisa Corbo deserve a big thank you for putting this great event on for a great cause with a very talented designer.

My favourite part of fashion week is wrap-up time!! Spring/Summer 2012 is going to be impressive with what we have seen on the runway. This season it was so great to be back in the tents, it makes it really feel like fashion week and the downtown location made everyone’s life easier I bet! Although there were some problems with less seating this season, all in all it was a great set-up and location.
Bustle and David Dixon went a lot softer with their collections still having their staple designs but more of a hint of bold colours. Lots of adventurous colours are going too been seen this coming spring and summer 2012 as we have seen on the runway. Another thing we have been seeing is a lot of on the go pieces for women in charge like the Attitude Collection by Jay Manuel. This collection has something for every woman on the go or just ready to get on that plane and hit the beach. By having Arthur Mendonca hitting the runway opening night his collection blew the week wide open. His pieces were a mix of vibrant strong colours and straight edge designs but we have to give him credit for knowing what women really want and will look amazing in, it’s something he really has an eye for.
Denis Gagnon wowed the crowds with his very artsy short film which went right into his collection. His pieces were immaculate and include some crazy floral designs with some simple but very sleek pieces. We also cannot forget Micalla Jewelry ; I had seen her stuff hit the runway at Ottawa Fashion Week but at LGFW she really got my attention. Her collection is very different than most, all her pieces are very wearable and there is something for everyone to wear and enjoy. Will we see a collaboration with Swarovski? We hope so as these pieces are a work of art. The spring/summer 2012 runway was filled with an oasis of bold colours, floral and wild prints, cocktail and long flowing dresses which were very colourful and delightful to see. The men on the runway dressed in dapper and casual short suits with lots of cotton and linen.
